Learn To Fly Fish At Baker Acres

Largemouth Bass with Fly Rod

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fly fish? Spend the day fly casting and learning how to land fish on your own private water in the idyllic Shenandoah Valley. Our half day trips are staffed with instructors excited about teaching you the ins and outs of fly fishing and are perfect for beginners and kids. Our fly fishing classes are suited to your group needs and abilities and each fishing guide brings a patient and carefree attitude to the day which creates a relaxed and pleasurable experience to get you started off on the right foot.

Will I learn how to fly fish?

While you won't be the best fly-fishing angler in just a few hours, our guided trips will cover everything you will need to learn to get started. Casting, knot tying, entomology, and how to set the hook and catch a fish will all be covered so you'll feel confident when you hit the trout stream.

What Will I Catch?

The pond has a variety of fish including rainbow trout and golden trout, largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish. All fish are catch and release as we welcome the opportunity to get to teach kids about conservation.

Do I Need a Virginia Fishing License?

No, you do not need a fishing license as it is private property. Be aware that public waters including Shenandoah National Park require a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license and trout stamp.

What Time Is a Half Day?

We can work with your schedule and drive time but traditionally our morning sessions are 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. and afternoon sessions start at 1 or 1:30 p.m. Just ask, half day lessons are typically 4 hours so if we can make it work we will.

Why Private Water?

Private water provides some of the best fishing options for those who want to learn this marvelous sport. Less fishing pressure and stocking means providing first-rate experiences and more fishing action compared to other local waters subject to put and take fishing. We also keep our student-to-teacher ratio low so that each angler gets plenty of attention. (5 anglers per instructor max).

What About A Fly Fishing School?

Middle River Outfitters full and multi day fly fishing lessons for those interested in more time on the water. Spend the afternoon learning the basics, then take to the mountains or Shenandoah River the next day with the know how already in place. Custom trips can include smallmouth bass floats, native brook trout stream fly fishing, or trout school where you'll learn about more advanced fishing techniques, reading the water, and fly selection.

What Is The Cancellation Policy?

We ask a 50% deposit at the time of booking. We fish rain or shine, but the guide may cancel in cases of bad or unsafe weather. In that case we offer a full refund back. In terms

of illness or medical issues we'll do the best to reschedule with you.

What do I need?

We will provide all the equipment for your fishing trip. If you have your own fly rod and fly reel outfit bring it along, but it isn't necessary to purchase anything. Sunscreen, bug spray, hats, and sunglasses are always a good idea. We'll have water on site, but feel free to bring your own non alcoholic beverages and snacks.

What is the cost?

Guide fees are $300 for the half day and $25 per angler to access the private property.
