Virginia offers some of the best trout fishing opportunities on the East Coast, thanks to a robust and carefully planned trout stocking schedule managed by the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Whether you're chasing native brook trout in wild mountain streams or casting into urban waters, the Commonwealth’s catchable trout stocking plan makes it easy to find great fishing throughout the year.

Understanding Virginia's Catchable Trout Stocking Plan

Each year, the Virginia DWR executes an annual trout stocking plan to enhance fishing opportunities and maintain healthy trout populations. The catchable trout stocking program provides over one million catchable-sized trout to designated stocked trout waters across the state. These include rainbow trout, brook trout, and brown trout, stocked from October 1 through June 15.

The trout stocking plan is designed around several factors, including water temperatures, habitat conditions, and proximity from the hatchery to the receiving water. The DWR monitors stocking events closely, and while the stocking schedule is available to the public, stocking times may vary depending on conditions such as low stream flows, summer water temperatures, or circumstances that compromise the resource or public safety. In those cases, DWR may postpone or change the date of the stocking events.

Virginia classifies certain waters as “designated stocked trout waters,” where trout license required regulations apply from October 1 through June 15. These areas include both special regulation trout waters and category A waters, which are stocked frequently and are ideal for easy access and plentiful fish.

Fee fishing areas, such as Douthat Lake in Douthat State Park, offer another option. A daily fishing permit is often required here, in addition to a Virginia freshwater fishing license and trout license. These locations are excellent for family fishing events or those new to trout angling.

Anglers can also explore urban fishing program waters, which are part of Virginia’s effort to provide convenient, local access to stocked trout waters. These are often close to city centers and offer a great introduction to the sport.

When to Fish: Stocking Dates and Trout Seasons

The Virginia trout stocking schedule is released annually on the eregulations website and outlines stocking dates for each location. Stocking events occur from October through May, with the most intensive efforts concentrated between October 1 and June 15. Virginia also observes a Heritage Day, typically in early April, which celebrates traditional trout fishing and includes special stocking events in trout heritage waters.

Keep in mind that some waters may be closed to fishing before a stocking event to protect recently stocked trout. Always check the stocking schedule and regulations for the specific area you plan to fish. Also be aware that low water in the fall can be harmful to trout in Virginia, so not all fishing waters are stocked starting October 1st.

Fishing Legally: Licenses and Regulations

To fish in designated stocked trout waters during the stocking season, anglers aged 16 and older are required to have a Virginia freshwater fishing license and a trout license. Artificial lures may be used in most areas, but some special regulation trout waters may have gear restrictions—be sure to check what regulations apply.

Put-and-take areas allow you to keep your catch, usually with a limit of six trout per day, while other waters may operate under delayed harvest rules, where trout may only be caught and released until a specified date.

Supporting Trout Habitat and Conservation

Virginia’s stocked trout program complements efforts to preserve and restore wild trout streams, especially in regions like the Shenandoah National Park, where native brook trout thrive in cold, clean mountain waters. The Virginia DWR works year-round to maintain suitable trout habitat, manage fingerling trout, and monitor the health of trout populations across the state. While catchable stocked trout provide a reliable fishing experience, the conservation of wildlife resources ensures that trout angling remains sustainable for generations to come.

Plan Your Next Trout Fishing Trip

Virginia’s trout stocking schedule gives anglers an easy way to find where and when the state plans to stock. Whether you’re heading to a mountain stream, a fee fishing area, or an urban fishing spot, knowing the stocking schedule helps you plan effectively. Remember: license required, check for closed to fishing notices, and always review the latest stocking dates. With proper preparation and respect for the waters, you'll find good trout fishing all across Virginia.
